Downloading an Over-the-Air update
First, make sure that your vehicle is in “Online mode”. In vehicles with the ID. software 3.0 or higher, please register as the main user of the vehicle with your Volkswagen ID.
On the start screen, select the “Online mode”
Select the “Setup” tile on the infotainment screen
Select private settings
Select “Vehicle/Usage data”
With your vehicle in “Online mode”, available updates are downloaded in the background while driving. The update download and installation will not incur additional data costs. Your ID. will inform you via the infotainment system as soon as a software update is available for you to install.
Does “Online mode” mean I am sending or sharing my location data?
In earlier software versions the activation of “Online mode” in the vehicle automatically enabled the sending or sharing of vehicle location data and vehicle usage data – with no ability to individually select your preferences for the sending or sharing of this data. From the 3.0 update onwards, it will now be possible to enable “Online mode” but then individually select your preferred settings for the sharing of vehicle generated data (vehicle-/usage data, location data, Vehicle2X data) – allowing your vehicle to remain online while giving you the option to decide yourself what data you want to send or share (except for legally required functions such as eCall). To receive Over-the-Air updates, the vehicle/usage data must be activated in private settings.
Safety notice for the software updates
Please note that the vehicle cannot be used during installation of the software updates. Read the Release Notes carefully before installing a software update.
Installing an Over-the-Air update
At the end of the journey, safely park your ID. and apply the electronic parking brake. Turn off the ignition. Your ID. needs a stable, constant internet connection during installation.
Please ensure a minimum charging status of 50% and then remove the charging plug. Make sure all windows are closed.
On the initial screen, select the "Update Available" option to start the update installation. Please make sure that the online mode is activated.
On the System Update screen, you can select "More Information" to view the Release Notes – please read them carefully before installing the update. If there are other conditions to be met before installation (e.g. closing the window), your ID. will show you these in the infotainment system before starting the installation.
Once you have read the release notes and no further action is required, press the "Install" button.
If you receive a message in the infotainment system of your ID. with additional information about the installation of the update, please click on "Ok" after reading. After that, you may start the software update.
The installation starts as soon as you get out and lock the vehicle.
If you open your ID. within the first two minutes after locking the vehicle, the installation will be cancelled. During the installation of the update, you will not be able to use or charge your ID.
As soon as the installation is complete, you will be informed in the infotainment display and can then set up a main user.
Note: It is not possible to revert to previous software versions.
You now benefit from new and improved functions. Volkswagen wishes you continued fun and a pleasant drive in your ID.
