How does a heat pump work?
Sustainability has top priority: alongside net carbon-neutral delivery of the ID.5, Volkswagen has also assumed responsibility for climate protection in its choice of refrigerant. This is because a heat pump is used with the refrigerant R744. This has a significantly lower climate impact than fluorinated refrigerants. Thanks to its high efficiency, it is an energy-saving way of heating an electric vehicle in cold outside temperatures.
In comparison with a combustion-engine vehicle, the drive components of an electric vehicle do not produce sufficient waste heat in order to adequately heat the vehicle interior.
The solution: a highly efficient heat pump system compresses refrigerant at high pressure. The resultant heat is used to heat the cold air flowing through.
This means that less energy from the battery is used for the high-voltage heater, and there is a range benefit compared with electric vehicles without heat pump.
