The Beetle Builder
This summer, the Connolly family gathered to honour a quiet hero of Irish automotive history, Denis Connolly, affectionately remembered as the “Beetle Builder”. A proud native of Drinagh, West Cork, Denis led the team that assembled Ireland’s very first Volkswagen Beetle in 1950 which became known as the famous “Ballsbridge Beetle” and the first Beetle ever built outside Germany.
Nearly 75 years later, his children and grandchildren were reunited with that very Beetle, serving as a moving reminder of how legacy, heritage, and community shape our history. We thank the Connolly family for sharing their memories and helping us celebrate 75 years of Volkswagen in Ireland.

On Sunday, July 27th, we welcomed classic car enthusiasts from across the country to our headquarters in Liffey Valley for a truly special occasion—The Air-cooled Beetle Event, celebrating the return of the iconic Ballsbridge Beetle. This exclusive gathering brought together a vibrant collection of classic air-cooled Volkswagens, with the legendary 1950 bug, known as “The Ballsbridge Beetle”, taking centre stage.
