Celebrating 50 years of the iconic Golf GTI!

50 years of pure thrill.

This year we are proudly celebrating 50 years of the iconic Golf GTI. To mark this milestone birthday, we met with two Irish Golf GTI enthusiasts, Hugh and Ryan, whose long-standing passion for the model embodies what makes the GTI so special. Through their stories, experiences, and shared love for the GTI, we captured the true spirit of what it means to be part of the Volkswagen community. This film is a tribute to the loyalty, excitement, and pride that unite GTI fans across generations.

The legacy will still be carried on, right through all the generations from MK1 to MK8. "

Golf GTI history

The Golf GTI launched in 1976. It's combination of agility, everyday practicality, and sporty character sparked a new category: the hot hatch. Early models stood out with their red‑trimmed grille, black wheel‑arch accents, and distinctive “golf ball” gear knob, helping turn the Golf GTI into an instant success. Volkswagen highlights eight generations from the Mk1 (1976) to today’s Mk8.5, each introducing improvements in power, handling, engineering, and technology. More than 2.5 million GTIs have been produced, cementing its place as the world’s most successful sporty compact car.

In 2026, Volkswagen is marking 50 years of the Golf GTI. Volkswagen is celebrating this anniversary with a special edition model, which pays tribute to the past and at the same time sets new standards: The Golf GTI EDITION 50.
